How to make: basic games.

"Well"

date: January 22, 2006

There is some information in there, nothing major.
It's all copy+paste codes for n00bs. I suggest you start learning AS and build your own engines.

As for the flash format, the text sometimes overlapped which was annoying.
You should of provided examples of what was happening.

And you should of tought people the AS, showing them in stages what each bit does.

I suggest you got the the forums here on NG, and search for AS:Main, and then start learning some AS. With that under your belt, you'll have a better changce of getting something great in the portal.

You have tallent, but this isn't what you should use it for.

Thanks.

I shall do what you just said.

PALADIN episode 4

"Paladin is a great series."

submission: PALADIN episode 4
date: January 19, 2006

Just a few questions,
Was that voice actor the same voice actor who did Legend from Xin?
Did you use your face as a guide for this?
It seems to be the same style character as your Massacre animation.

Story was good, i learned some tips from this... like how to completly fake fire lol...

But i liked it, good use of re-using symbols and great face animations when speaking. Making the whole face move rather than just the mouth.

Overall it was great, i hope to see more action in the final part.

The second in this series is still my favourite.

Organ Merchant

"Very nice"

submission: Organ Merchant

Graphics are lovely.
But there are a couple of errors,
- Play buttons, please use the hitTest, double click the button, and draw a rectangle on the hitTest layer that covers the play. Making them easier to click.
- I love your shading style, but some effects such as the loading screen's hill and other hill in the movie can easily be shaded though radial shading, but then click and drag the fill to the bottom right to make it fit.

But it was great, a fantastic story, and i loved the harcore anal midgets ;)

- JPI

Author's Response:

i didn't know that about the hitTest, but radial shading looks cheesy.

"A well presented music video"

submission: Ulan
date: January 11, 2006

But unfortunatly, us Newgrounders are hard to please.

The animation was great, should have been smoother in certain places, but was fantastic anyways. I remeber the character from DrLove and i'm overwhelmed that you've got another character.

But what us Newgrounders want something more than a music video of your characters, we want storyline or a comedy. This was just a bunch of well animated characters with little background.

I'm sure if you do a good comedy with these characters, you'll be able to get frontpage.

The lipsync was ok... it seemed better towards the ending, but you needed to add slightly more detail to the mouths, because it is seen so much, you shouldn't underanimate.
To make the lipsync better, add more mouths to the character, have a look at JackSmack's animation tutorial 3.

So, in future, add more to the background, and add some comedy storyline (comedys generally only have 1 or 2 backgrounds because they are generally shorter).

And, for future reference, i think you should have a look at the "V-Cam", perform a google search, and you should find an article about it, and a .fla to download. It's an "in flash" camera that you can tween and fade so you can have interesting camera shots. Just don't over-use it as it should be used subtley.

It might be interesting to think about doing simple shading on the characters when they arn't in lights, but it might ruin the style. But it is worth thinking about.

Wow, this review is getting too long, i'd better stop.

Nice animation and a good day to you. I'm awaiting your next submission.

Now this is what I call a review! Thank you very much for your comments, this is really helpful. I would really like to say something more about your comments but I can't choose my words, sorry. I'll try to spend more time about my production. Thanks again.

Nobodies Shorts #5

"I found something trippy :S"

submission: Nobodies Shorts #5
date: January 9, 2006

OK, if you wanna go on a trip, after the intro and the guy says "Hey Chris", rightclick and it play, then when it loops, you'll get an echo, but it's played out normally making a trippy effect :S

Oh, and i have a sandwich maker too! :D

Nice short :)

Good use of underanimating :D

gogo Happy & Smile

"I'm very happy."

submission: gogo Happy & Smile
date: January 9, 2006

Thank you for submitting this under the right name!
It's a fantastic game, although it uses the same sprite as Dan Paladin explosion which i am a little concerned about.
The graphics are nice, and your being critised heavily for stealing this... why didn't you redo the explosion?
Anyway, I was one of the people who help get the old version off the site and emailed you regarding this. And i've very happy you decided to submit this.

It's a great game.

Justice League Tribute

"Lovely art"

date: December 30, 2005

Nice tribute, the art was good, but the animation wasn't the best. I would of voted 5, but you could of done some story instead of a tribute.
Although this was some lovely fan art, i gave you a 4/5

Virtual Police (Stage 1)

"It was great"

date: December 30, 2005

But you can make it better. If this is your first 3d work, i applaud you, 3d is damn hard to create. As for the improvements, for stage 2, i'd like to have some more coding like this:
Duck behind object, to aviod bullets, of you can.
Reload only after 6 bullets are gone. Otherwise you can tap space while tapping fire to never have to reload.
Reload to take some time (ducking would be nice here :D)
Anyways, onto the game, the gameplay was great, and there was also a little humor remembering the original unnessisary spining and crounching in all the original (virtua cop, time crisis 1+2+3)
Just for future reference, spend more time on the cutscene, it is a nice part of the movie, so you have to take extra special care with the graphics (and that means hand tweening! :P)

Anyways, it was a fantastic game, but better characters (if possible) would be awesome!

Otherwise, i loved it!

- JPI

Author's Response:

Hmm... Well the reloading is like other shooters. Yeah, cutscenes were a pain to do so I kinda skimped on them. And I'll probably improve the graphics next time.

The Ma$sAcre 2: Revenge

"GREAT"

date: December 29, 2005

But the sound let it down a bit, on some parts the dialogue just didn't fit the song, however the army war part, was incedible.
As always, i loved the work by Jazza, this particular use of blur in flash 8 in this collab was great.
And there were lots of other cool grusome parts that i forgot right about now.
The 3d weapon guy (forgotten his name in the credits) made this even better.
A wonderful collab, i'd love to join the next one.

Revenge is a great theme, and reminds me of the fantastic works of Quentin Tarantino.
